Palm oil comes from palm trees. The trees must be cut down in order to collect it.
This is one of the main reasons why native forests are cut down. People are cutting down trees and not planting them back again meaning huge sections of the Amazon Rain forest is disappearing at a alarming rate
BUT
there is a solution - sustainable palm oil - this is where palm oil is farmed. They replant the same area of land over and over again meaning they don't keep chopping down new areas of land.
Palm oil can be found in lots of things such as peanut butter, biscuits, soaps and much more. Lots of companies use it in their products but not all companies label it clearly, some even try to hide it! One of the most common false names for palm oil is vegetable oil or vegetable oil [palm] this is still palm oil and unless it says so is most likely from an unsustainable source.
